Since its inception in 1985, the Biology and Chemistry of Vision conference has been regarded as the premier meeting in retinal photoreceptor and pigment epithelium biology. During its 40-year history, the conference has served as a forum where the latest groundbreaking discoveries in the biochemistry, physiology and cell biology of these critical cells are first presented and where controversial findings are rigorously debated. It has been a key meeting for young vision scientists to make their debut, for trainees to identify future mentors, and for established scientists to develop new and productive collaborations with the best and brightest. The meeting has remained a centerpiece of vision research owing to continuous evolution, driven at the grassroots by the scientists who are actively working in the field. The conference organizers are elected by the attendees, thus keeping the subject areas presented current and cutting edge.

As part of this evolution, in 2027 we will hold this meeting as an independent entity for the first time. This will allow the meeting to recapture some of the vital features of past meetings, including more unstructured time for attendees to continue vital scientific discussions, develop new collaborations and for trainees to gain exposure and develop new mentoring relationships. At the same time, the grassroots nature of the meeting will be strengthened. We hope you will join us as we embark on this new journey.
